I was given the task of creating a soundtrack for the April 10. 2011 event at Cervantes Other Side in Denver. Billed as “All the Way from Athens, GA – A Celebration of the Life and Times of Garrie Vereen” this fundraiser brought friends and family together to honor the man. Sam Holt and the Very Gereen Band played (essentially Dyrty Byrds with some other special guests) and made sure our ears and hearts were filled with joyous sounds.

Thanks again to all of the volunteers who helped make this event a success particularly Shawna Sprowls, Lisa Rockwell, Val Dahl, Cameron and Chip Loomis and thanks to Tom Ferrell. I would also like to personally thank Cervantes Other Side and Duncan Goodman for donating the venue and helping with set up.

This mix was inspired by Sam Holt’s Garrie intros compilation. As we were driving to the Atlanta airport to come home after Garrie’s Memorial, Tom Ferrell, Bob Cone and I were talking about how cool it would be to actually hear the songs that were played after Garrie’s announcements. I created this mix to have some music playing between the sets of music Sam’s band was going to be playing. I tried to pair some of the better stage announcements with some good versions of songs without any song repeats.

This mix proceeds chronologically from JoJo’s first show through to what I believe to be the final time Garrie announced the band (during 92-95) on 7/19/95. I have also thrown in some FINE performances from two of Garrie’s birthday shows; 10/26/99 and 10/26/01.

I finish everything up with Garrie’s post-show thank you to the crowd from his birthday in 1993.

Please note that if you are burning these to disk, Disk 3 is technically too long and you will need to leave 7/19/95 out.

And so, without further ado, “All the way from Athens, G A…”
