vanillag NOTES:
–This one’s for Mikey!!: Michael Houser sadly passed on this afternoon at his home in Athens, GA from complications related to pancreatic cancer – the whole night is inspired by & dedicated to him w/ shoutouts & references throughout.
–the sound on this show, while nice & clear, was a little strange with the stereo imaging in that Jerry’s vox & guitar were mostly panned to the right & the drums mostly panned to the left (bass up the middle)…it’s a little off-putting/distracting to listen to the show this way (IMO) so I mixed the channels together to make things more balanced–this makes the proceedings in glorious mono, of course, but since the stereo imaging here was so bizarre, I felt the sacrifice was worth it to bring the sound more in balance & make it an improved listening experience (again, IMO)
–there wasn’t much bass nearly at all in this thing when I started…there is now–hahaha!!
–combed thru & removed many little clicks in this show that I discovered (both loud & soft ones)
–smoothed out a huge volume change ‘jump’ in the recording at the beginning of the show where the recording volume was suddenly jacked down (about a 7db difference!!)
–was able to cleanly remove 3 bad bits of feedback in Set 1; removed an additional 21 bad bits of feedback in Set 2
–put a bunch of careful, detailed love into this & feel like it came out much, much better.
–wish we could all go to that party at Farmer Brown’s in Boise the next afternoon that JJ mentions (set2t10 after tune)

I cannot believe I’ve been waiting for this nearly eleven years!! What an absolute blast of a weekend. I’ve been hanging out with an absolute amazing crew and this show was a blast. A huge shout out to Anthony, Joe, Skeeter, Pati, and Sunny (Hate5Six) for making this such an unforgettable weekend!

We got to Alpine Valley right before 3PM and set up shop in the very back of the parking lot in the shade. After sitting for awhile we heard what we thought was the band sound checking so we went over to see what was going on. We got to hear a few songs sound checked, including Bombtrack, No Shelter (only the intro), The Ghost of Tom Joad, and Testify. Bombtrack was first had Zack on vocals and hearing that made it real for me. The others were only instrumentals but I lost my shit hearing No Shelter and Tom Joad, two songs I never expected to hear live.

After what seemed like forever we eventually went inside. I set up shop against the back rail center-ish for both RTJ and Rage. At 9:20 the lights dimmed and we began to hear Zack over the PA. I couldn’t make out what he was saying but it gave me chills. It was finally happening!!! His speech ended with saying “This is a Public Service announcement” and then the band came out and I nearly cried. The band opened with Bombtrack and then proceeded to play one of the best sets I’ve ever seen them do. The band was TIGHT – Zack was jumping and running around like a maniac, Tim was pounding the bass, Tom was destroying the guitar, and Brad was holding everything together. This IMO blew their other shows out of the water between 2007-2011. Mad props to the practice they’ve been putting in as it definitely shows.

In terms of the recording it reflects what I heard. However, for Killing what I did was abandon my spot, went into the pit, and had Joe, Skeeter, and Anthony lift me up where I waved the legendary Che flag. It was an honor to be able to wave that at a show. I was lifted up twice for that and it was the highlight of the show for me. Zack looked straight at me, we made eye contact. Security was NOT happy and I had to go down. The mics flew off my hat which is why things get chaotic but I don’t think you’re going to find anyone else with Schoeps doing that.

I also filmed the show in 4K. Will be sharing that as well!

This is just the first of 50 more shows. If the soundcheck is any indication there is some WILD stuff on the way :)

There aren’t enough words in the human language to describe Col. Bruce Hampton. This night was certainly not a tragedy. While heartbreaking, it was strangely beautiful. Only the Colonel could gather the most legendary musicians of our time to celebrate his life, then leave it behind to join the stars in the sky. He had the distinct honor of playing his own memorial service—an experience no other species is capable of. It was during the encore, the very last notes, that the universe got its mojo back.

Thank you Col. Bruce Hampton, for the endless laughs, life lessons, and career-shaping wisdom you’ve shared with your musical community. The jam scene would not be anywhere that it is today without your guidance.

Show Notes: Here is my stab at both the setlist and the musicians who participated. I may have some mispelled names. I may not have included every musician who may have played on certain songs, but hopefully someone took some complete notes. I did try and keep track the best I could, but my mind may have been in other places, especially at the end of the show.

It is with great sorrow and a heavy heart, that I dedicate this recordng and upload in memorium to a great friend of mine, Col. Bruce Hampton. After seeing him perform for almost 30 years, I will miss him immensely. He has meant SO MUCH to both myself and the Atlanta Music Community, and the entire National Music Community for that matter! He was one of a kynd! You certainly went out in the right place among your family, fellow musicians, friends, and adoring fans.

RIP my dear friend Bruce. I Love You and will always cherish our friendship!

Thanksgiving weekend, 1972: the Grateful Dead found themselves in Austin, allowing Garcia and Lesh to rendezvous with an old Bay Area running buddy, Mr. Tex-Mex himself, Doug Sahm, and piano-journeyman Leon Russell, at the famed Armadillo World Headquarters for a musical cornucopia of roots music. No genre was left untouched – blues, bluegrass, R&B, rock & roll, honky tonk and, naturally, Bob Dylan. All played with an ad hoc band, including members of Texas psychedelic pranksters The 13th Floor Elevators and Shiva’s Headband, with a setlist that effortlessly bounces from hellcat versions of Kristofferson’s “Me & Bobby McGee” and the Stones’ “Wild Horses”, to a don’t-spill-your-beer “T For Texas”, saddled with stompin-the-nails-out-of-the-floorboard cuts like “Hey Bo Diddley” and “Money Honey”. This is a shitkicker of show, best served turned up, with fistfuls of turkey and pint glass of your favorite sumthin’.

* The drummer is often listed as Bill Kreutzman from the Dead, but apparently he didn’t play. Here’s what I found on the interweb: “Though he was in attendance that evening, there is no verifiable evidence that Bill Kreutzmann sat in with the band. When asked a few years ago, the owner of the Armadillo seemed to recall Bill feeling sick that night.”
