If you head out on Chase Street toward the chicken plant, it’s an unsuspecting but correct route to the site of more inner workings of the Panic machine – the warehouse that houses all of the band’s equipment and the various merchandise offerings.

Inside the little storefront attached to the warehouse, it’s clear you’ve found a happy place. Colorful Widespread Panic posters a
dorn the walls, shelves are a rainbow of T-shirts, hats, CDs, DVDs and stickers. You’ll no doubt be greeted by a black and white, blue-eyed dog named Tootie who, with a shy but cheerful wag, offers a toy to visitors who stop in.

Tootie belongs to the smiling Greta Bettis, whose co-workers describe her as a “Jack of all trades.” Fans might wonder if she’s the same “Greta” referred to in the song title from 1997’s “Bombs and Butterflies,” and she confirms indeed she is.

“It’s a funny song,” she says with a laugh.

What does it take to keep the band playing? An army at home
